A grab-and-go kit should be light enough to move and useful enough to cover the first part of an evacuation. It is not a miniature version of your entire home supply.
Pack the irreplaceable items first
- critical medication and medical supplies
- identification and copies of essential documents
- phone, charging cable and compact power bank
- water and a small amount of ready-to-eat food
- flashlight or headlamp
- basic first aid and hygiene supplies
- weather-appropriate clothing
- pet leash/carrier, records and food if applicable
Keep the bag personalized
A family with infants, pets, mobility needs or prescription medication will need a different bag from a healthy single adult. Add what cannot be easily replaced during the first hours away from home.
Do not overload it with gadgets
Weight matters. Large tools, heavy water containers and redundant electronics can make the bag harder to carry and distract from medication, documents and communication.
How PrepHearth chooses products for this list
Portable, reliable and multipurpose items receive priority. We avoid turning evacuation into a tactical-gear shopping exercise.
